In Paris and in many other French cities, yesterday was not the celebration of summer solstice but of music. The streets were full of people, dodgy looking hot dog stands pushing blue smoke and all sorts of musical performances. I myself went to the Ménilmontant neighborhood and ended up following a samba parade to a party in a parking lot.

I had a great time and the metro run exceptionally through the night so I didn't have to stress out about getting back home (which can sometimes be a real challenge in a city the size of Paris). A native Parisian had claimed that the Fête de la musique is a disappointment every year, but my expectations were met: it didn't rain and I got to dance with friends.

Many tourists coming to Paris estimate the success of their search for accommodation according to the distance from the hotel to the Eiffel tower. If I was a tourist, I would say that my current flat is very well situated. The iron tower is right around the corner.

But if you live in Paris, living next to the most famous monument of the city suddenly doesn't seem like such a delight. It's hard to exit your building to the street blocked with masses of tourists. A small glass of juice at the café downstairs costs you five euros and you have to keep trying to avoid the young guys swinging miniature eiffels on their metal rings.

No, on asunnon sijainnissa hyvätkin puolensa.

Well, there are good sides to the location of my apartment. It takes me ten minutes to cycle to work at Quai d'Orsay and the river is always near. On Sundays there's a lovely market just down the street (I'll surely talk more about it later). And so that no one would get the wrong idea, let's admit it: it is quite nice to see the Eiffel tower every morning while riding my bike by the river.

When the time of the departure draws near everyday things start to seem special. Here are some photos I took during my last days in Lille. They are of a bad quality and they might portray things that are boring. Still, I felt the need to take them. I'm sharing them here because they tell something about why I loved life in Lille.

Sisäpiha yöllä,  The court yard at night.

LOSC.

Place de la République.

Kotibileet Vieux Lillessä. House party in Vieux Lille.

Olohuoneen sekamelska. The mess in the living room.

Kuuma kylpy. Hot bath.

Illallinen naapureiden kanssa. Dinner with the neigbors.

It is true what they say about the people of Northern France: they have a big heart. The atmosphere of the city catches even those who have come from far. Even though Lille and much of the surrounding region are poor, people don't hesitate to share what they have. Crime statistics may tell a different story but I myself never came across anything but kindness on the city streets. It would be a pleasure to come back some day. Until then, I can only thank the ch'ti people and everyone I had the privilege to meet during the nine months I lived in Wazemmes, Lille.

Seuraava tehtävä: löytää maroilles-juustoa Pariisista!

Next mission: find some maroilles cheese in Paris!

A couple of weeks ago I read an article about the cycling week on the website of the national broadcasting company of Finland. It said that the state of the cycle paths is poor in Finland and that the attitudes towards cyclists are negative. It inspired me to share with you my personal experience of cycling in Lille.

I bought my bicycle as soon as we'd gotten rid of the winter and the snow. I found it at the site leboncoin, where people sell all kinds of used stuff, a kind of a flee market that is. The bike doesn't have a brake in the back and the one in the front isn't great either, so it only cost me 20 euros. It is pretty though and I've totally fallen in love with it! I guess I'll have to take it to Paris with me for the summer.

Lille on erinomainen pyöräilykaupunki.

Lille is a great city for cycling. It is so "small" that cycling gets you to the other side of the city in no time and it is so flat that most of the time you're just rolling on as if you were in Holland. It seems like most of the main roads have a cycle lane and even most of those tiny one-way streets are marked two-way for cyclists. Still, I think my favorite thing are the miniature traffic lights for cyclists pictured above.

I've been getting along with the cars pretty well. The drivers in Lille seem to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists, so I feel pretty safe and relaxed on the cycle lane - an experience unknown to my friends in London, where I visited last week. In London cyclists are particularly afraid of the aggressive black taxis and of big lorries bringing materials to the building sites of the city. Last year fourteen cyclists died in London traffic.

In Tampere cyclists have to worry about angry pedestrians. The word on the streets was that there were grannies who tried to impale passing cyclists with their umbrellas. In Lille I haven't gotten in trouble with pedestrians either because there are no shared routes for pedestrians and cyclists. However, the greatest pleasure is riding my bicycle on the empty streets at week nights when there's no more traffic and the pedestrians mostly stay in areas known for their night life. Just me, my bike and the city. Oh, the feeling of freedom!

Direction Paris

Kävin eilen Pariisissa. Siellä odotti tuleva huoneeni, pieni ja pölyinen. Ja niin viehättävä.

I went to Paris yesterday. There it was waiting for me, my future room, small and dusty. And so charming.

So if someone didn't hear about this yet, I will be doing an internship in Paris this summer. In other words, I will continue my observations on France and the French after Lille. I'll be sitting by the Seine instead of the Deûle, and rue de Trévise will be replaced by Quai d'Orsay. In a way I don't even want to think about leaving Lille now that I finally feel at home here. It's a city of perfect size, full of lovely people and good beer. On the other hand, I'm really excited about the internship and summer in Paris. Isn't life just thrilling sometimes?

When I left for France, my mum gave me a mission: to find out why French women don't get fat. Now, after studying the subject for months, I have the honor to publish my results. Here you go, all of you ladies worrying about your body fat. But might I just first remind you of something. Your body is beautiful the way it is, so don't take this post too seriously!

1. Ranskattaret tupakoivat.

French women smoke. Where as in Finland smoking is a hobby for 15-year old boys who learn how to fix cars, in France it seems like most of my student colleagues, male and female, smoke. When you smoke a cigarette, food won't be as tasty and in any case you don't feel hungry. Also, you will spoil the appetite for the rest of the company.

Joten etenkin tupakoivien naisten tulee ravattua portaita melko tavalla.

The buildings don't have elevators. Well, the houses in Lille aren't exactly skyscrapers but I do think getting up to the second floor daily does something to you. At the university there's an elevator but it's so slow no one has the patience to wait for it. So especially the women who smoke will be running up and down those stairs quite a lot.

People go out a lot. Instead of spending all winter on the couch under a blanket burning candles and eating chocolate, the French go out at night all year long. This might sound a little funny but I believe that if you have to walk to get to your dinner (or at least until the metro), those cheesy menus are easier to digest.

4. Ranskattaret pukeutuvat kauniisti. He eivät välttämättä lopulta olekaan niin laihoja kuin kuvitellaan, mutta he ostavat kauniita, hyvinistuvia vaatteita, jotka tuovat esiin heidän vartalonsa parhaat puolet. Kokonaan toinen asia sitten on, miten kukin tämän lystin rahoittaa. Ehkä varat Comptoir des Cotonniersin mekkoihin otetaan ruokabudjetista.

French women dress nicely. In the end, they might not be as thin as you think, but they buy beautiful, well fitted clothes which bring out the best sides of their bodies. As my flatmate said: "Elles savent mettre leur corps en valeur." A whole different question is how to finance this sort of beauty. Maybe the money for Comptoir des Cotonniers dresses comes from their food budget.

Macarons are quite small after all. You can't get fat eating those. And even though the candy department in Carrefour is abundant, I've hardly ever seen anyone actually eat candy. Maybe it's a children's thing. Or maybe no one feels like eating them because none of the candy bags includes any salmiakki
