Le chauffage

Eräänä aamuna herätessäni ikkuna näytti tältä:

The other morning when I woke up, the window looked like this:

Kosteus oli tiivistynyt juovina ikkunan sisäpinnalle, asunnossa oli jäätävän kylmä.

The humidity had condensed as dew drops on the inside of my window, it was freezing cold in the appartement.

Yritin käännellä kaasupolttimen vipuja, mutta mitään ei tapahtunut. Sisällä paloi sininen liekki, kuten ennenkin. Olen oppinut, että se lämmittää veden.

I tried turning the controls on the gas burner but nothing happened. There was a blue flame burning inside, as normal. It heats the water, I've learned.

Lopulta soitin vuokranantajalle pyytääkseni häntä tilaamaan huoltomiehen. Madame B. kuitenkin paljasti, että keittiöön johtavan käytävän seinässä on pieni pyörylä, josta voi säätää lämpötilaa. Löysin säätimen ja käänsin sen 25 asteeseen. Ja johan roihahti tuli kaadupolttimessa! Onnesta autuaana kääriydyin peittoon ja kävin päiväunille lämpimässä huoneessa. Illalla kämppis tuli kotiin ja valitti: "Putain, il fait chaud ici!" ("Täällä on hemmetin kuuma!"). Hulluja nuo ranskalaiset.

In the end I called my landlady to ask her to call the maintenance. However, Madame B. told me that there was a little button in the corridor leading to the kitchen. I found it and turned it to point at 25 degrees. And boy did the little flame in the gas burner grow! I then happily wrapped myself into a blanket and took a nap in my warm and cozy room. At night my flatmate got back home and complained: "Putain, il fait chaud ici!" (It's too damn hot in here!"). Those french people, they are so crazy sometimes.

Suostuin alentamaan lämpötilaa 22 asteeseen (mikä siis tarkoittaa, että täällä on ehkä noin 19 astetta lämmintä, kiitos erittäin tehottoman eristyksen). Pahimmat kosteusongelmat ovat nyt kuitenkin häipyneet ja pyykitkin kuivuvat kahdessa päivässä (aikaisemmin siihen meni 3-4 päivää). Sängystä on helpompi nousta aamuisin. Kaikki siis hyvin näillä kulmilla!

I agreed to lower the temperature to 22 degrees (which means that in reality it's like 19 degrees in here thanks to the very inefficient insulation). Anyway, the worst part of the humidity problem is gone and the laundry only takes two days to dry (it used to take 3-4 days). It's easier to get out of my bed in the mornings. So all is well on this street!
