The warm weather has finally arrived after the long colder period. At the same time arrived a fever that didn't want to leave.

Terveyskeskus lomalla.

When organic asparagus didn't help, I decided it was time to go see the doctor. Since I'm not entitled to the French social security, it has sometimes been a challenge to do this. Fortunately the local student health service welcomes me free of charge and so I called them. And I called again. And again. But there was no answer. In my feverish head I figured it must be a problem with the phone. I mean they couldn't be closed for the holidays, otherwise they would have left a message at the answering machine, and there was nothing on their web page either. So I gathered the last of my strength and I took the metro to Porte de Douai. There it was, closed. The health center was on holidays.

I was furious about the fact that a health center would just abandon its patients like this. No message, no nothing! Well, angry, I walked into a pharmacy to get some medication for my cough. A friendly woman sold me a bottle for 5 euros. When I got home I get to reading what it said on the side of the bottle and found out it was homeopathic! The woman had just sold me a bottle of something that has no proven efficacy, without even warning me! Mad with rage I decided to give up on the french health care providers and collapsed onto the couch thinking "this would never happen in Finland..."

"No tunnetko jonkun lääkärin Lillestä?" Täällä on hyvin tiukka omalääkärijärjestelmä, ja ihmiset käyvät hoidossa jonkun tietyn lääkärin luona, eivät jossakin tietyssä terveyskeskuksessa kuten Suomessa. En tietenkään tuntenut ketään lääkäriä, joten katsoin netistä lähimmän lääkärin ja soitin sinne. Tapaaminen järjestyikin samalle aamupäivälle ja sain heti antibiootit korvatulehduksen taltuttamiseksi. Lysti maksoi 23 euroa.

But my encounters with the system were not over. When I'd had fever for almost a week, I decided to try again. I called my neighbor and asked him where I should go to get treatment. "Well do you know a doctor in Lille?" he asked me. Here in France they have a very doctor-centered system where you go and see a particular doctor instead of going to a particular health center like in Finland. Of course I didn't know a doctor so I found the nearest on the internet and called the number indicated. I got an appointment for the morning and they gave me antibiotics to fight the ear infection. This service cost me 23 euros. See, it wasn't that difficult as soon as I agreed to play along the rules of the system.
